Prepare Your Children for the Road | School Begins at Home

A child can have the best grades in the class and still be poorly prepared for life. Because school can teach mathematics, science, history and languages. But some lessons begin somewhere else. At home. That is where children learn to say: Good morning. Please. Thank you. I’m sorry. It is where they learn that mocking another child can leave a scar. That difference is not an invitation to disrespect. That another person’s dignity is not determined by a backpack, clothing or family income. In this episode of African Business Revolution, YannicK KOUNGA begins with the story of Junior, a nine-year-old in Douala whose worn backpack becomes a symbol of a much larger question: How do we prepare our children to face the world without losing their dignity? WHAT SCHOOL CANNOT TEACH ALONE Teachers have an enormous role. But they cannot replace the family. The foundation is built at home: respect; courtesy; honesty; humility; empathy; responsibility. Children do not only copy what we tell them. They also learn from what we fail to correct. THE FOUR INTELLIGENCES We often measure children using one form of intelligence: IQ. But life requires more. 1. IQ — Intellectual Quotient Learning, reasoning, calculating and solving. 2. EQ — Emotional Quotient Managing emotions, acting responsibly, being honest, punctual and able to live peacefully with others. 3. SQ — Social Quotient Building lasting relationships, creating trust, respecting and being respected. 4. AQ — Adversity Quotient Facing failure, frustration, injustice or hardship without losing direction. A child with strong IQ may pass an exam. Life will also demand character. PREPARE THE CHILD, NOT THE ROAD We love our children so much that we often want to remove every difficulty. But we cannot control the world they will inherit. It will be competitive. Sometimes unfair. Unpredictable. Our responsibility is therefore not to clear the entire road. It is to build enough inner strength for them to keep walking. Work honestly. Respect what belongs to others. Help at home. Care for belongings. Respect rules. Honor language and culture. Understand the value of effort. Small habits become large foundations. A CALL TO AFRICAN PARENTS School should not become the subcontractor of our responsibility as parents. Neither should the street. Neither should screens. Our children are growing up in a world of multiplying influences. That makes the role of parents even more important. Before sending a child to school to acquire knowledge, we can already give them what allows knowledge to become something beautiful: respect; discipline; humility; resilience; dignity. A VISION FOR AFRICA Imagine an African generation that is highly educated — but also respectful. Technological — but deeply human. Ambitious — but honest. Connected to the world — but proud of language and culture. Able to win — but also able to survive failure. That is also how we prepare Africa’s future. Because the African business revolution does not begin only in startups, banks or boardrooms. It begins in the formation of the people who will one day lead them. And that formation often begins at home.
